ETC ETC EXHIBITION

A SERIES OF FOUR DANCE FILMS
IN A POP UP EXHIBITION
FREE ADMISSION

Presented by Conor Lui-Fakaotimanava and Emma Martin

Sunday 6 March 2022, 5-8pm, Poplar Union,
2 Cotall St, Poplar, London, E14 6TL

This project is made up of a series of four contemporary dance films that are a dialogue between sound, movement and light. Inspired by the different reactions each individual person feels to music and sound. The four films on a continuous loop are diverse but have similar constructs. Each film has a different energy and uses improvised dance movements to explore the surrounding spaces. The films, all shot in East London enabled Lui-Fakaotimanava and Martin to explore their fascination with light as well as featuring their unique neighbourhood of Poplar where they currently reside. The two artists have a history of creating works together and they are continuously looking to push the boundaries of creativity in dance and film.

The Films

Queen of Shade (full film) 2022
Video, projection, colour, sound
Duration: 4 mins

In contrast to the surrounding films, this work embraces quiet sounds and soft movements. Both are qualities that feel right when connected to the shadows. During performance the aim was to embody tranquil and peaceful thoughts.

Poplar Memoir (snippet) 2022

Video, projection, colour, sound
Duration: Snippet 15secs, full film 4 mins

A visual poem to the neighbourhood of Poplar, East London. This film aims to explore the skyline and architecture of the surrounding area. Much like the local community and the passing DLR trains the camera and performer are always on the move.

Stop Following Me (snippet) 2022

Video, monitor, colour, sound
Duration: Snippet 15secs, full film 4 mins.

Inspired by a combination of techno raves and everyday hand gestures. This film plays with the idea of dancing in small areas. Tiny hand movements, and subtle head nodding can create high energy and fun. Presented here in a loop with Disco at Sunset to contrast hand and full body movements.

Your Boring (snippet) 2022

Video, monitor, colour, sound
Duration: Snippet 15 secs, full film 4 mins

Sunset, a favourite time of day for many, sets the tone for this film. Shot in a studio but lit to represent a theatrical version of the setting sun. The movements are an ode to freedom and spontaneity.
